For most residential and recreational applications, maintenance can be relatively simple. The basic maintenance program normally includes six areas:
| Maintenance Task | Typical Frequency | Main Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Remove leaves and debris | Daily or as needed | Prevent debris accumulation and grass compression |
| Light brushing | Every 2–4 weeks | Restore grass-blade orientation |
| Water rinsing | Monthly or as needed | Remove dust and fine particles |
| Seam and edge inspection | Monthly | Identify lifting or adhesive failure early |
| Spot cleaning | Immediately when necessary | Prevent stains and odors |
| Seasonal inspection | 2–4 times per year | Check drainage, wear, seams and overall condition |
The appropriate frequency depends on traffic level, climate, installation quality, drainage conditions, and application.
A private garden may require only occasional maintenance, while a busy sports facility may need a much more structured maintenance schedule.
Remove Leaves, Dirt and Surface Debris Regularly
The simplest maintenance task is also one of the most important.
Leaves, branches, packaging materials, stones, food debris and other foreign objects should be removed regularly.
If debris remains on the turf for long periods, it can:
- Compress the grass blades
- Block drainage openings
- Accumulate organic matter
- Encourage mold or unpleasant odors in humid environments
- Increase abrasive wear when people walk or play on the surface
For residential applications, a soft broom or leaf blower is generally sufficient.
For sports facilities, mechanical brushing equipment may be appropriate, provided that the equipment is compatible with the turf manufacturer’s recommendations.
Recommended tools
Use:
- Soft nylon brushes
- Soft turf rakes
- Leaf blowers
- Suitable commercial turf maintenance equipment
Avoid aggressive steel brushes or tools that can damage the yarn or backing.
When brushing, it is generally preferable to work against the prevailing direction of the grass blades to help restore their upright position.
