  • What is Artificial Grass?

Artificial grass, also known as synthetic grass or artificial turf, is a surface made from synthetic fibers designed to look and feel like natural grass. Initially used in sports arenas, artificial turf is now also used in residential lawns and commercial applications. Its versatility and adaptability have made it a preferred choice for various applications beyond sports fields, including playgrounds and landscaping projects.

    How is it Made?

Artificial grass is made from a combination of polyethylene, polypropylene, or nylon fibers. These fibers are designed to mimic the look of natural grass. The fibers are attached to a backing material, which provides stability and support. The surface is then filled with sand or rubber granules to provide cushioning and support. The manufacturing process involves precise engineering to ensure the fibers are durable and can withstand UV exposure and heavy use.

The construction of artificial grass involves several layers, each contributing to the performance and longevity of the turf. The backing material is often made from a strong, water-resistant fabric, ensuring the grass maintains its shape and doesn’t tear easily. The infill material, usually a mix of sand and rubber, provides the necessary bounce and resilience, closely mimicking natural soil’s impact absorption properties.

  • Multiple colour choices available

With synthetic grass you have multiple colour choices available. One can design multiple sports areas with different coloured synthetic grass as per one’s choice and same with the colour for the line-marking for various sports as it comes in a burst of colours and designs for multi-sport courts. When there are several sports to be accommodated and space is restricted, multi-sport courts work brilliantly for an institution, community and home use. Further, the range of colours makes it more inviting to the young and professional alike. Not to mention that our colours are also UV stabilized and heavy metal free!

  • Low maintenance, unlimited usage

    Not affected by weather

Matches and training sessions can take place on synthetic grass throughout the year, even in poor weather conditions – simply because synthetic grass remains the same regardless of the time of the year and has zero downtime due to maintenance. Maximize your playing hours and you game on synthetic grass.

    No sunlight required

Synthetic grass is the perfect solution not just for outdoor facilities but also for indoor facilities or stadiums where large areas of the field remain in the shade. Synthetic grass does not require any sunlight and hence is more hassle-free than natural grass.

  • Uniform ground conditions across the field

Natural grass fields often have a bumpy patch and this might lead to injury owing to uneven bounce or a trip hazard. Synthetic grass fields are planned and constructed keeping in mind the playing of various sports on the same. And the exact same characteristics are uniformly found all across the playing surface.

    No need for watering

Synthetic grass does not need water to survive but natural grass dries up and dies if not watered properly. Thus, synthetic grass helps save water and is environmentally friendly.

    No maintenance

Natural grass, being a living entity, requires heavy maintenance. It needs air, water, sunlight and even fertilizer. Not to mention the fact that it needs mowing, cutting and pruning as well. Synthetic grass requires none of this. Where you are using synthetic grass for sports applications, it requires very light maintenance in terms of brushing.

  • Greater usage time

Amateurs as well as professional clubs often face the problem of natural grass pitches getting worn out due to intense use. Installing additional grass pitches means more land and maintenance cost due to which people are unable to install grass pitches. Most accepted estimates place natural-grass field’s yearly playable hours between 500 and 1,000, and synthetic grass fields at minimum 2,000 to 3,000 hours and more, depending upon the product used. For instance, the TigerTurf XP Pro yarn has an unlimited yarn durability warranty for the 1st 5 years regardless of footwear (followed by the standard warranty from years 5 to 10). Thus, installing synthetic grass is a very cost-effective approach owing to its utility, versatility and number of hours of play.

  • Why should you install synthetic grass?

The benefits of synthetic grass are immense when it is compared to natural grass, especially in areas of high usage or unforgiving climate. In a country like India where the weather condition is diverse, synthetic grass is easy to maintain and has a high life span too. Due to its resistance to weather and durability when it comes to intense use, it is the best alternative to natural grass.

Here are some of the many reasons why you should install synthetic grass.

    Longer life span

Synthetic grass has a much longer life span, with uninterrupted usage, over natural grass. Natural grass pitches get worn out easily due to rough use while playing sports but synthetic grass survives for a longer period despite this wear and tear.

  • There is much to take in here, and the impact of any new requirements

There are a number of other changes that we haven’t gone into here, such as maximum and “preferred” slopes, tightening up of allowable deviations around the mean for ball roll tests, restrictions on pad re-use for some categories and restrictions on colour for some categories. Please do not hesitate to call for how these changes may impact your facility.

There is much to take in here, and the impact of any new requirements can sometimes take time to filter through to the market. However, it is certainly fair to say that the level of testing of products and facilities has been stepped up – and ultimately, this will help to bring the FIH in line with organisations like FIFA and World Rugby.

  • What do I need to know?

    1. Forward planning

Durability is also important and so they undertake a series of simulated wear tests. They look at abrasion resistance, carpet strength, directional stability, turf bind and the strength of joins. All the yarns used in these turfs must also meet standards in fibre polymer characteristics, tensile strength, UV tests and toxicology requirements.
    2. Forward planning

The number of product classes available for categorising a product has been increased to six. These range from ‘Global Elite’ to ‘Multi-sport’, giving you much more choice depending on the needs of your installation.

    3. Material matters

The new requirements will also see the materials used to manufacture artificial grass hockey pitches more closely examined for properties such as yarn type, density, or dtex, and thickness. Fill materials are also being examined – thus ensuring that the information listed by manufacturers is consistent with what is being installed.
    4. Stricter testing

The UV Radiation test, which is conducted on the yarn filaments, within the artificial grass has been increased from 3000 hrs to 5000 hrs. Additionally, a new test classifying skin friction has been added for ‘Global’ category products – with further tests measuring durability, player-surface interaction, shock pad and toxicology set to be introduced in due course.
    5. A new game format

Finally, the relatively new format of Hockey 5s courts has been officially introduced into the classification, and can be offered up for certification.

  • What does it mean?

The upshot of this revision is that products and installations put forward to be certified by the FIH are being more thoroughly examined. For the manufacturer, this will mean developing new hockey surfaces to meet the requirements, and developing new surfaces as further criteria are added. For the club, school or university investing, the handbook provides more scope to ensure your facility is certified to the appropriate FIH mark.
