The fundamental difference between non-infill artificial turf and natural grass is the difference between a manufactured surface and a living plant system.
Non-infill artificial turf is typically made from synthetic fibers such as polyethylene (PE), tufted into a backing and engineered to perform without loose granular infill. It does not grow and therefore does not require the ongoing biological maintenance associated with living grass.
Natural grass, by contrast, is a living plant system that depends on sunlight, water, nutrients, suitable soil and regular maintenance to remain healthy.
This basic difference affects almost every aspect of ownership, including maintenance, water consumption, seasonal appearance, durability, surface temperature, playing characteristics and long-term cost.
There is no universal winner. The more appropriate option depends on the site’s climate, usage intensity, maintenance resources, appearance requirements and lifecycle budget.
